CONOR'S CRS STORY
I attended Camp Rising Sun in 2002 and 2003. Over the past 25 years, those two summers have served as both a foundation and guiding force in my life, both professionally and personally.
Camp was the first time I got to know kids from around the world. Sharing a tent with peers who hailed from places I’d never heard of before and practiced religions and spoke languages different from my own – but were equally curious and excited to get to know one another – profoundly impacted me. Camp gifted me an invaluable network that celebrates our differences and transcends our many social trappings. It also taught me about personal agency by calling on each of us to be our own leader and take a vested interest in serving our communities.
Little did I know, but a worldview was molded. Camp became a microcosm of what I want to see both in myself and in the world. In the following decades, I found myself increasingly drawn to people and experiences that contrasted with my own. I studied international affairs. I moved across the country. I served in the Peace Corps. I pushed myself to seek mission-driven work in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors. It’s impossible not to question whether I would have taken these paths had it not been for Camp.
I am thrilled to be serving as a member of the LAJF Board. As Camp approaches its centennial year, I look forward to helping make its next 100 years just as impactful as its first, ensuring future generations are given the same experience I enjoyed.
We thank our Board of Directors for their passionate leadership of LAJF and CRS!
